Types of load

Page history last edited by Lewis 14 years, 2 months ago

Boulders, cobbles, pebbles, gravel, sand, silt, clay are only a few common types of loads.

Silt and clay have to be deposited by flocculation* whereas the larger sediments can be deposited by a velocity decrease.

flocculation*- when salt water meets fresh water (the mouth)

flocculation needs to occur for the partile (clay) to get deposited unless the river velocity hits 0, however this doesn't occur often. Apart from when the flood waters are still.

It needs alot of energy for it to move for they (clay and silt) are very cohesive. But when it entrains it will travel fluently. This is can be shown on the hjulstrom curve.
