Tidal Energy

Page history last edited by SeanW 12 years, 11 months ago

- Tidal energy is produced as the tide goes in and out.

- Around the UK the tides rise and fall atleast twice a day.

- Barrages or damns are built, as water passes under or through them, turbines rotate and electricity is produced.

- Around 30 potential sites have been indentified around the UK, the largest site would be the Severn Barrage which would spin the River Seven.

Advantages:-

- Low running costs

- No pollution is produced

- Reliable technology

- No fuel is required for it to run

Disadvantages:-

- Only a few sustainable sites in the UK

- Only early development stages

- Tidal schemes are expensive to install compared to other renewable energy schemes

- Damning can affect the environment over a large area

- Barrage schemes will only provide energy for 10 hours a day
