Optimistic - Best Case Scenario

The optimistic approach comes from Esther Boserup, who suggested that instead of population outstripping food resources, agriculture and technology would increase efficiency in response to population increase, thus producing more food.

She claimed that farming is a business and a larger population means a bigger market, higher demand and greater potential profits. This leads to farmers producing more food to meet demand.

Evidence supporting the optimistic approach:

  • We have developed new types of seeds that produce crops that grow more quickly or in greater quantities (High Yielding Variety - Green Revolution).
  • Mechanisation has increased efficiency on farms.
  • Fallow periods have been reduced.
  • We have developed new ways to generate electricity such as wind power, solar energy and tidal power.
  • We have developed fertiliser and pesticides to increase efficiency.
