Rip rap or rock armour is large boulders placed in front of cliff to break up waves. It costs £3,500 per meter and lasts 30-50 years.

Advantages:

• absorbs wave energy without causing reflection scour
• long lasting
• cheaper than sea walls 

Disadvantages:

• unsightly appearance
• reduce recreational value of beach
