Optimum population: The population at which the quality of life of the people of a country or region is the highest possible at a given level of technological development.

Overpopulation: when any increases in population reduces the average quality of life and a decrease in population would improve the quality of life.

Underpopulation: when an increase in population could actually increase the quality of life.
